Recently Ive been looking into server management with the Dell OpenManage Suite. This post is about managing and ESXi 4.1 with Dell ITA.

Installing OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) on ESXi

Installing the OMSA VIB package on your ESXi 4.1 system allows ITA to communicate with the server. Please refer to my previous post for OMSA 6.5 VIB installation instructions (you do not need to install the windows client): Installing OpenManage Server Administrator 6.5 on ESXi 4.1

Configuring SNMP

Server Administrator uses SNMP to send traps in response to changes in monitored parameters. In order to work properly, you have to configure Server Administrator to send traps to your ITA host. You can use the vSphere CLI utility to do this.

  1. Launch vSphere CLI (you can run this from anywhere on your network)
  2. Execute this command: vicfg-snmp.pl --server <server> --username <username> --password <password> -c <community> -t <hostname>@162/<community>
    1. server: you ESXi system
    2. username/password: of your ESXi system
    3. community: choose a “community name” for your server to be a part of
    4. target: hostname is your ITA host, 162 is the ITA port, community is your chosen community name. Note: make up your own private community name, “public” is the default and I recommend not using this because of its insecurity.
  3. Enable SNMP: vicfg-snmp.pl --server --username --password -E
  4. View SNMP configuration: vicfg-snmp.pl --server --username --password -s
  5. Send a test trap: vicfg-snmp.pl --server --username --password -T

If you can run the configuration command, enable SNMP, see the correct target information in the config settings, and send a test trap without any error messages, you are ready to at the device in ITA.

Add the device to ITA

If you need any help installing ITA or including a range in ITA, please refer to my previous post : Installing Dell OpenManage IT Assistant

To add your ESXi 4.1 system, in the “new include range” menu:

  1. Enter the IP address of your system
  2. Click next until you arrive at the “SNMP Configuration” step
  3. Check the “Enable SNMP Discovery” check box and enter the community name you chose when you configured SNMP on ESXi in “Get Community”
  4. Click next until step 7, select “Perform Discovery and Inventory”
  5. Finish, select “View” tab, click “Devices” to see if your system is configured correctly. Refer to my installing ITA post for further info.

Features

Unfortunately, most of ITA’s features are not supported for ESXi. If anything, you would only want to add you ESXi devices to view basic OS level alerts and OS info. Here are a couplescreen shots from what I got with my system:

  • “Device Details”
  • An attempt to use the software update utility, which didn’t work.
